What citation format should I use for my thesis or dissertation?
Answer
Generally speaking, APA format is used for in-text citations and bibliographical references in the sciences. You may also want to talk to your adviser to see what format he/she recommends (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.). Some engineering disciplines use IEEE or another numbered style.
For more examples, look at past theses and dissertations that have been submitted by students. Click on By Program and choose your area in the pull-down window. Browse and peruse several documents to see how other students presented their works. The library has a good guide, Understanding Citations, that may help you. Also, this comparison chart from Purdue Owl is very helpful.
